Pattern Yul-gok

Yul-gok is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar Yi I (1536-1584) nicknamed the “Confucius of Korea.” The 38 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on the 38th latitude, and the diagram represents the Chinese character for “scholar.”

Movements: 38

Ready stance: Parallel ready

  1. Move the left foot toward B into a sitting stance toward D, while extending the left fist horizontally, on the shoulder line, toward D.

Perform moves 2 and 3 in a fast motion

  1. Maintain the sitting stance to D and execute a right punch with the forefist.
  2. Maintain the sitting stance to D and execute a left punch with the forefist.
  3. Move the ball of the left foot straight to the side of the right foot. Then, move the right foot toward A into a sitting stance toward D, while extending the right fist horizontally, on the shoulder line, toward D. 

Perform moves 5 and 6 in a fast motion

  1. Maintain the sitting stance toward D and execute a left punch with the forefist.
  2. Maintain the sitting stance toward D and execute a right punch with the forefist.
  3. Pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward AD into a right walking stance while executing a side, block with the inner forearm.
  4. Execute a left, low, front snap kick to AD, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 7.

Perform moves 9 and 10 in a fast motion

  1. Lower the left foot toward AD into a left walking stance while executing a punch with the forefist.
  2. Maintain the walking stance toward AD and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.
  3. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward BD into a left walking stance while executing a side, block with the inner forearm.
  4. Execute a right, low, front snap kick to BD, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 11.

Perform moves 13 and 14 in a fast motion

  1. Lower the right foot toward BD into a right walking stance while executing a punch with the forefist.
  2. Maintain the walking stance toward BD and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist. 
  3. Pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward D into a right walking stance while executing a side, hooking block with the palm.

Perform moves 16 and 17 in a connecting motion

  1. Maintain the walking stance toward D and execute a reverse, side, hooking block with the palm.
  2. Maintain the walking stance toward D and execute a punch with the forefist.
  3. Move the left foot toward D into a left walking stance while executing a side, hooking block with the palm.

Perform moves 19 and 20 in a connecting motion

  1. Maintain the walking stance toward D and execute a reverse, side, hooking block with the palm.
  2. Maintain the walking stance toward D and execute a punch with the forefist.
  3. Move the right foot toward D into a right walking stance while executing a punch with the forefist.
  4. Pivot on the right foot and form a right, bending ready stance type A to D.
  5. Execute a left, side piercing kick to D. At the same time execute a high, left, punch with the forefist.
  6. Lower the left foot toward D into a left walking stance while executing a reverse, side front, strike with the elbow, to the left palm and finger belly.
  7. Pivoting on the left foot, and turning clockwise, form a left, bending ready stance type A to C.
  8. Execute a right, side piercing kick C. At the same time execute a high, right, punch with the forefist.
  9. Lower the right foot toward C into a right walking stance while executing a reverse, side front, strike with the elbow, to the left palm and finger belly.
  10. Pivot on the right foot, and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward E into a right L-stance while executing a twin knife-hand block.
  11. Move the right foot toward E into a right walking stance while executing a front, thrust with the straight fingertip, pulling the back of the left fingertips under the right elbow.
  12. Pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward F into a left L-stance while executing a twin knife-hand block.
  13. Move the left foot toward F into a left walking stance while executing a front, thrust with the right straight fingertip, pulling the back of the right fingertips under the right elbow.
  14. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise; move the left foot toward C into a left walking stance, while executing a high, side, block with the outer forearm.
  15. Maintain the left walking stance toward C and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.
  16. Move the right foot toward C into a right walking stance while executing a high, side, block with the outer forearm.
  17. Maintain the right walking stance toward C and execute a reverse, punch with the forefist.
  18. Jump toward C into a left X-stance toward BC, while executing a high, side, strike with the backfist to C.
  19. Pivot on the left foot and turn clockwise; move the right foot toward A into a right walking stance while executing a high, block with the double forearm.

While executing move 38 shout “Yul-gok” as a ki-hap and remain in this position until given the next command.

  1. Move the ball of the right foot to the side of the left foot while facing D. Pivot on the right foot and turn counterclockwise, move the left foot toward B into a left walking stance while executing a high, block with the double forearm.
