Kwang-gae pattern diagram

Kwang-gae is named after the famous Kwang-Gae-Toh-Wang, the 19th King of the Koguryo Dynasty, who regained all the lost territories including the greater part of Manchuria. The diagram (土) represents the expansion and recovery of lost territory. The 39 movements refer to the first two figures of 391 A.D., the year he came to the throne.

Ready stance: Parallel with a Heaven Hand

  1. Straighten the right foot, and at the same time bring the left foot to the right foot into a close ready stance B toward D, moving both hands in a circular motion.

Perform move 2 and 3 in a slow motion

  1. Move the left foot toward D into a left walking stance while executing a low, reverse, upset punch.

  2. Move the right foot toward D into a right walking stance while executing a low, reverse, upset punch.

Perform move 4 in a double stepping motion

  1. Move the left foot to the side front of the right foot, and then move the right foot toward D into a right walking stance while executing a high, side, hooking block with the palm.

Perform move 5 in a sliding motion

  1. Move the right foot toward C into a right L-stance toward D, at the same time execute a low, guarding block with a knife-hand toward D.

Perform move 6 in a double stepping motion

  1. Move the right foot to the side front of the left foot, and then move the left foot toward D into a left walking stance while executing a high, side, hooking block with the palm.

Perform move 7 in a sliding motion

  1. Move the left foot toward C into a left L-stance toward D, at the same time execute a low, guarding block with a knife-hand toward D.

  2. Pivoting on the right foot and turning clockwise, move the left foot toward D into a right, rear foot stance while executing a high, guarding block with a knife-hand.

  3. Pivoting on the left foot and turning counterclockwise, move the right foot toward D into a left, rear foot stance while executing a high, guarding block with a knifehand.

Perform move 10 in a double stepping and slow motion

  1. Move the left foot to the side front of the right foot, pivot on the left foot and turning counterclockwise, move the right foot toward D into a left walking stance toward C while executing a reverse, upward block with the palm toward C.

Perform move 11 in a slow motion

  1. Move the right foot toward C into a right walking stance while executing a reverse, upward block with the palm.

Perform move 12 in a circular motion

  1. Bring the left foot to the right foot into a close stance toward C while executing an inward, low, block with the right knife-hand, hitting the left palm.

Perform move 13 and 14 as a consecutive kick

  1. Execute a left, pressing kick toward E, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 12.
  2. Execute a side piercing kick to E, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 13.
  3. Lower the left foot toward E into a right L-stance while executing an obverse, high, inward, strike with the knife-hand. At the same time bring the left side fist in front of the right shoulder.
  4. Pull the left foot to the right foot into a close stance toward C. Execute a downward strike toward E with the left side fist.

Perform move 17 and 18 as a consecutive kick

  1. Execute a right, pressing kick toward F, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 16.
  2. Execute a side piercing kick to F, keeping the position of the hands as they were in move 17.
  3. Lower the right foot toward F into a left L-stance while executing an obverse, high, inward, strike with the knife-hand. At the same time bring the right side fist in front of the left shoulder.
  4. Pull the right foot to the left foot into a close stance toward C. Execute a downward strike toward E with the right side fist.

Perform move 21 and 22 in a slow motion

  1. Slip the left foot toward C into a left low stance while executing a pressing block with the right palm.
  2. Slip the right foot toward C into a right low stance while executing a pressing block with the left palm.

Perform move 23 in a stamping motion

  1. Pivoting on the left foot and turning clockwise, move the right foot toward D into a sitting stance toward F while executing a high, side, strike with the right backfist toward D.
  2. Pivoting on the left foot and turning clockwise, move the right foot into a right walking stance toward D while executing a double forearm block.
  3. Maintain a right walking stance toward D while shifting toward C. Execute a reverse, low, block with the outer forearm toward D while keeping the position of the right hand as it was in move 24.

Perform move 26 in a slow motion

  1. Slipping the right foot toward D into a right low stance execute a high, thrust with a flat fingertip.

Perform move 27 in a stamping motion

  1. Pivoting on the right foot and turning counterclockwise, move the left foot on line CD into a sitting stance toward F while executing a high, side, strike with the left backfist toward C.
  2. Pivoting on the left foot and turning counterclockwise, move the right foot into a left walking stance toward C while executing a double forearm block.
  3. Maintain a left walking stance toward C while shifting toward D. Execute a reverse, low, block with the outer forearm toward C while keeping the position of the left hand as it was in move 24.

Perform move 30 in a slow motion

  1. Slipping the left foot toward C into a left low stance execute a high, thrust with a flat fingertip.

Perform move 31 and 32 in a stamping motion

  1. Move the right foot toward C into a right walking stance while executing a high, vertical punch with a twin fist.
  2. Pivoting on the ball of the right foot and turning counterclockwise move the left foot toward A into a left walking stance while executing an upset punch with a twin fist.
  3. Execute a right, front snap kick to A, keeping the position of the hands at they were in move 32.
  4. Lower the right foot to the left foot. Pivoting on the right foot and turning clockwise, move the left foot toward A into a left L-stance toward B while executing a guarding block with a knife-hand toward B.
  5. Move the left foot toward B into a left walking stance while executing a high, punch with the forefist.

Perform move 36 in a stamping motion

  1. Move the right foot to B into a right walking stance while executing an upset punch with a twin fist.
  2. Execute a left, front snap kick to A, keeping the position of the hands at they were in move 36.
  3. Lower the left foot to the right foot. Pivoting on the left foot and turning counterclockwise, move the right foot toward B into a right L-stance toward A while executing a guarding block with a knife-hand toward A.

While executing move 39 shout "Kwang-gae" as a ki-hap and remain in this position until given the next command.

  1. Move the right foot toward A into a right walking stance while executing a high, punch with the forefist.
